Preconceived ideas about log cottages and Rayben’s answers |
One cannot live in a log cottage year-round |
We build and insulate our cottages according to the same energy considerations as those used in conventional homes. You can enjoy all the modern comforts and a uniform temperature throughout the year. These days, more and more people are choosing to use a cottage as their main dwelling. |
 |
Log cottages are not built to last |
A cottage that is well designed and maintained is an investment for your lifetime and that of your descendants. It can last over 400 years. |
 |
Log cottages are expensive to heat |
As we have received Novoclimat certification, we know exactly how to build energy-efficient houses. We take into account insulation, tightness, and ventilation, just as we would for any other type of housing. Therefore, our cottages’ energy efficiency is equal or greater than that of most conventional constructions. |

Log cottages require a lot of maintenance |
All the wood is pre-treated with a first coat of stain before installation; we can also treat the entire structure during the final installation stage. In that case, two coats of stain are applied, as well as a UV filter coat. Following recommendations, the next treatment need only be applied four to seven years later, depending on the location of your cottage. Many cottage owners enjoy doing this maintenance themselves, but if you are not one of them (or if you do not have the time), we can do it for you |
 |
Log cottages warp over time |
Wood is a living material and your cottage will indeed settle by three or four inches during the first few years. We take this phenomenon into account when we build it, and this settling is compensated by systems integrated in the walls, windows, and doors. We also install an elevating screw in the central column, which you can periodically either adjust yourself or have us adjust for you. In any case, follow-up of your cottage’s evolution is included in our service package.
Creaking noises, for their part, are completely natural; they occur during great temperature fluctuations or when indoor humidity levels are insufficient. We will advise you with regard to limiting this phenomenon. |

A wooden house is an open house for insects |
Insects are like us: they like to take it easy. They therefore prefer to establish themselves in hospitable, soft, and easily accessible areas. That is why they are usually found in rotten or very humid wood. If the wood is properly installed, treated, and maintained, there is no reason why you should have uninvited guests. We design our cottages to avoid these risks: we judiciously choose their orientation to reap the benefits of sunshine, adapt eaves overhangs to avoid the accumulation of snow in the front, and install French drains with technical access to avoid any accumulation of water on the ground. Owing to all these preventative measures, your cottage is well-armed to counter both insect and weather onslaughts – naturally. |
